YOUR NEW YORK RHINOPLASTY CONSULTATION
The first step is to schedule an initial rhinoplasty consultation with Dr. Aston’s office. Whether you are seeking facial rejuvenation, a new shape to your nose, or breast and body contouring, Dr. Aston will provide a full evaluation and develop an individualized treatment plan to meet your needs. He will tell you what will work and what won’t work to give you the best result. We welcome you to meet Dr. Aston and our amazing staff members.
PROCEDURE AND RECOVERY
Your rhinoplasty procedure will either be performed at Dr Aston’s own modern surgical facility or the Manhattan, Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital. Dr. Aston performs all of his rhinoplasty procedures in an accredited surgical facility under general anesthesia. The procedure lasts up to 2 hours and is considered outpatient. There will be swelling and soreness around the nose area after surgery. Bruising may or may not occur.
Your recovery begins as soon as you wake up in the operating room, as most patients will walk to the recovery room because of the short acting anesthesia we use. In the recovery room you may have some discomfort or mild pain. Our nurses will be with you constantly to manage any medication you may need. You will also be prescribed medication for pain as well as anti-inflammatory medicine to take during your recovery period to make your healing process as smooth as possible.
Your nose may be stuffed with packing in order to sustain the newly altered structures. Additionally, Dr. Aston will place a splint on the exterior of your nose to reduce swelling and hold your beautiful newly-shaped nose in place. We remove the splint on the 5th post-operative day.
Patients will be able to see their results immediately; however, it may take several months for the full results to appear. In most cases, patients can usually return to school or work 1 week following surgery. Full athletic activities, with the exception of contact sports, can usually be resumed in 3 weeks. It’s important to take all medications prescribed by Dr. Aston. Antibiotics are given prophylactically, but Dr. Aston has never had an infection in a primary rhinoplasty.
Limit your diet to bland, light foods for the first few days following your rhinoplasty procedure. If you’re not experiencing any difficulties, you can then move onto heavier, more flavorful foods.
DON’T STAY IN BED
Dr. Aston wants you up and walking outside the day after surgery. He often tells patients the morning after surgery to “get up and go to Starbucks”. You will need to walk around several times each day for a minimum of ten minutes to prevent the formation of blood clots. This will also promote the circulation and healing of tissues. It’s very important that you don’t bend or physically exert yourself until cleared by your physician. The tiny stitches still have the potential to break when you exert yourself.
Sleeping with your head elevated above your heart will help to bring down the swelling. It’s not required to elevate your head, however this position is the most comfortable way to avoid a smothering sensation while sleeping.
Also, It’s very important that if you normally sleep with your pet, this must be avoided for a few weeks following surgery – no pets in bed. It doesn’t matter how clean your dog or cat is, harmful bacterial near to your incision site must be avoided at all costs.
THINGS TO MONITOR DURING MANHATTAN RHINOPLASTY RECOVERY
➠ An increase in temperature is the first sign of infection. If you feel you have a temperature, check with a small thermometer.
➠ Unmanageable pain or headaches.
➠ If you experience excessive redness and/or heat.
Call Dr. Aston if you have a temperature, severe headache, or redness around your nose. The chances of this happening are very small, but Dr. Aston and his staff are always available to you.
MANHATTAN RHINOPLASTY RESULTS
Results following a rhinoplasty surgery can be quite dramatic for patients, even if the changes made were subtle. A natural, pleasing aesthetic outcome is always the goal. It is important for patients to understand that having rhinoplasty surgery will alter the look and overall shape of the face. Dr. Aston discusses all of this during his initial consultation. It is also important to understand that while the majority of results are just what our patients were hoping for, there is no such thing as perfection when it comes to cosmetic nose surgery.
Having realistic expectations up front is important during the pre and post surgical process. Patients will see a noticeable difference in their profile as well as how they appear facing forward. The smaller, softer, shapelier looking nose that is generally the result of a rhinoplasty surgery often has a great impact on our patients. It takes several months for the final results to be shown as the swelling continues to decrease over time. Dr. Aston will schedule several follow-up visits to discuss concerns (should there be any) and check the overall healing progress from the surgery.
